Do the limbo!
Women veterans returning from Iraq — especially women who are moms — are experiencing unique challenges that veteran men & dads have not. In our society, Moms are expected to be emotionally accessible and nurturing in ways men are not. But returning veterans commonly are emotionally IN-accessible and far from nurturing. Also, veteran moms who had leadership and command roles in Iraq suddenly find themselves in the all-too-common subservient role of wife and housekeeper again.
Sen. John Kerry (Democrat – MA) urged students to study hard — “and if you don’t, you get stuck in Iraq.” As a result the Republicans have gleefully made this “news” and taken the opportunity to insist that Kerry apologize to the troops who are actually in Iraq, and not — they say — because they are stuck there due to lack of studying.
Whatever. Here’s Vito’s take:
Prior to this the “contretemps du jour”, Republicans were making “news” over the notion that gay people loving each other was a threat to their heterosexual marriages. I guess Republican heterosexual marriages are easily threatened.
This comic became a litmus test of sorts. I received a number of emails and comments that accused me of pro-Bush bias because it appeared — to some writers — that I was saying the only reason the Democrats were criticizing Bush was because of politics. Ironically, my intent for the comic was the exact opposite. I thought a comic that listed the litany of Bush’s failures could only be interpreted as an anti-Bush statement.
BTW, I’ve sometimes read on other websites that Line Item Vito is a “conservative” comic. That makes me laugh. I just try to point out the politically absurd wherever I find it, and every party has hosted the theater of the absurd. That’s not conservative nor liberal. That’s Line Item Vito, the comic and character.
